Enjoying Your Outdoor Space: Games for Dogs
Date: 8/17/11 | Season: Summer

Pets need love and exercise as much as we humans do. Our furry friends like to have fun as much as we do, so why not take them outside and play some fun games this summer? They will happily thank you for the extra love and attention.
Games to Play with Your Pet Outdoors
Our furry friends enjoy a good game and improving their skills. Here are a few outdoor games to try with your pooch.
- Frisbee or Fetch – Dogs love to run around and they also appreciate a good challenge. This is great exercise for your dog; they are doing most of the work in this game.
- Treasure Hunt – Hide something your pet finds desirable (bone, toy, etc). Give them a treat when they locate the hidden treasure. This game will increase their concentration skills.
- Organize a doggie play date – Allowing your pooch to interact and play with other dogs will make them happier. It also gives the dog owner a chance to interact with other dog owners. If you don’t have any friends or family members with pets, make friends at your local dog park. You can also use social media to find other dog loving groups to become a part of. Remember to bring plenty of water for your dogs during play dates and also bring bags to clean up any messes.
- Hiking – If you regularly take your dog on walks around the neighborhood, switch it up and take your pooch for a nice outdoor hike. There are so many great trails in Colorado that are dog friendly. Make sure to bring plenty of water and a collapsible bowl for drinking. And pack some snacks because both you and your pet may work up an appetite! Properly protect your dog against fleas and ticks before heading out.
- Biking – Take the opportunity to teach your dog to keep up with your pace. There are leashes that are made for attaching to a bicycle.
- Swimming – Does your dog love to swim? If so, get a kiddie pool and let the pooch splash around in the summer heat. This will help keep your furry friend cool and also get a little bit of exercise.
- Water Toys – There are many waterproof / buoyant toys your canine friend can play with.
- Jumping – Place something high that your pooch can jump to try to reach. A hula hoop, tire swing or anything of the sort will work. Start off at lower levels and raise it higher as your canine friend gets better and more accurate. If using a hula hoop, you can start out near the ground and coax your dog to jump higher each time.
