Creating Privacy in Your Yard

Date: 3/30/11 | Season: Spring

Many Colorado homes have great yards but very little privacy. Enjoy your outdoor space to the fullest by creating more private space for you and your family. Here are a few simple ideas.

Fencing – the most obvious way to create more privacy in your outdoor space is to put up some type of fencing. This option can be on the pricey side but will provide a more private space for years to come. Fencing can also provide a sense of safety. If you have children or pets this is definitely an option to consider. Be sure to select a style and material that compliments your home.

Hedges / ShrubsHedges and shrubs provide a natural barrier which creates privacy in a way that is not intrusive. Have fun with this, mix and match heights and sizes to create visual interest. Shrub watering will need to take place on a regular basis, especially when shrubs and hedges are first planted. Shrub planting can be fun and instantly rewarding.

Large potted plants – Use large potted plants to make your whole yard more private or to section off a particular area of your yard. This is a creative and fun way to create privacy. Large pots can be moved around relatively easily so you can play with the design until you find a solution that works for you. Different sized pots, a variety of plants and textures can all make your outdoor space more enjoyable.

Pergola – A vine covered pergola can give you more privacy in a particular area of your yard. Pergolas can be enjoyed year round, can provide shade on the hottest of days and can be spruced up with fabric.

Lattice screens – If you would like to block a view or partial area of your yard, lattice screens are a perfect solution. They can be covered with vines, painted, stained or left with the natural look.

TreesPlanting trees around the perimeter of your yard will give you a more permanent solution to your privacy needs. Trees vary in height, maintenance and water consumption. Make sure to choose trees that will work in your particular geographical location. Swingle can help with these decisions and make appropriate recommendations for your particular home.

Stones / Large Rocks – These can be used to create privacy and in some cases can be used as sound barriers as well. They come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors and textures so be creative and have fun with this.

A big part of making our lives more enjoyable is defining our outdoor space. What works best in your yard?
