Lawn Mowing Tips:
You’ve spent a lot of time making sure your lawn is healthy and strong. Are you cutting it properly?
Spring: Mow frequently, especially in the spring when growth is rapid, but don’t cut off more than one third of the grass’s height.
Summer: Raise the height of the blade gradually throughout the summer. Mow more frequently, especially if there is a lot of precipitation. However, if the summer is dry and hot, less frequent mowing will be needed.
Late Summer to Early Fall: Set your mower’s blade at the highest height. This will help maintain a greener lawn for the rest of the mowing season.
Late Fall: Beginning in late October, gradually lower the blade to help prepare your lawn for winter. Making the last cut of the season low will reduce chance of snow mold and matting.
In any season:
• Remove debris and objects (like twigs or leaves) on the lawn surface for a safe, smooth mow.
• Sharp blades make for a cleaner cut! Sharpen them every four to six mowing (every four to eight weeks).
• Avoid mowing in extremely wet or hot conditions.
Seasonal Landscaping Brings Seasonal Color!
Spring: Pansies make excellent spring plantings! Combine colors from the opposite ends of the color wheel (like orange and purple) for eye-popping impact.
Summer: Flowering bulbs must be planted after the danger of frost is past: Usually the middle of May along Colorado’s Front Range. Ideal choices include: begonias, cannas, dahlias, caladiums and gladiolus.
Summer: Annuals are great for bursts of bright summer color. Good Colorado choices include: marigolds, zinnias, dahlias, salvias, snapdragons and sunflowers.
Colorful containers also add zip to your landscape.
Mix them in to your perennial beds and along your deck or porch.
Fall: Fall is best time to plant many bulbs, specifically those that like to start their roots in cool soil. Colorful options include: alliums, daffodils, irises and tulips.
Winter: Keep your winter landscape bright with evergreens and colorful shrubs like dogwood. Bright red or yellow bark of many shrub varieties can add a dramatic punch to a snowy landscape.
Holiday lights are also a delightful way to add winter color.
